There were few upsets Friday night in the first weekend of the WPIAL football playoffs, as many of the top seeds had byes, but there were a few that impacted the rankings.
Of course, the biggest shakeup came in Class 4A, where Aliquippa saw the return of quarterback Marques Council from what was originally deemed a season-ending knee injury to lead the Quips to the game-winning touchdown against Trinity in the quarterfinals.
Having Council healthy immediately elevates Aliquippa from a team that barely scraped its way into the postseason thanks to a West Allegheny loss to Montour in its regular season finale into a title contender. It also moved the Quips up to No. 2 behind McKeesport in the rankings heading into this week’s semifinals.
