GRAND FORKS – There is still $840,000 unaccounted for after a phishing scam targeted the Grand Forks Public Schools District last year.
Despite a still ongoing investigation, the district officially recorded the missing funds as a loss when books were closed in June. District Business Manager Brandon Baumbach said law enforcement has told district officials that these cases can remain open and under investigation for years.
The district has since strengthened its security and the incident has brought greater awareness to phishing scams across the district, Baumbach said. He said that cybercrime has become “increasingly pervasive and widespread” and urged other organizations to slow down, and be careful.
