The Colorado Mesa University football team squeaked out a tight 45-38 win on the road at Black Hills State on Saturday.

Defense was optional in the game as the teams combined for nearly 1,000 yards of total offense on the day — 516 for the Mavericks, and 449 for the Yellowjackets. Colorado Mesa inflicted the majority of their damage on the ground, gaining 225 yards and rushing for four touchdowns on the day.

Redshirt senior running back Brandon Belgrave paced the Mavericks’ backfield with 10 carries for 117 yards. Belgrave also scored twice, first via a 16-yard rushing touchdown in the first quarter and later on a 75-yard run on the first play of the second half that gave the Mavericks a 28-21 lead after the two teams entered halftime tied 21-21.
