LOUISVILLE, Ky. —

In an effort to combat growing food insecurity amid federal budget uncertainty, thousands of Louisvillians turned out Saturday to donate to Dare to Care Food Pantry at two community races: “Thru the Ville” at the University of Louisville and “Throo the Boo” at the Louisville Zoo. Across the events, organizers collected more than 40 boxes of food.

“These are incredibly challenging times for so many reasons. With rising costs of groceries. And then you add on top of it the federal government shutdown. And right now, SNAP benefits might be ending as of today. There’s a court case pending, but we don’t know what’s going to happen,” Mayor Craig Greenberg said.

At the zoo, “Throo the Boo” drew more than 2,000 runners. Donations there started at 18 boxes and grew to more than
