A 71-year-old alleged drunken driver hit and killed a 23-year-old pedestrian who was crossing a Hempstead street late Friday night, Nassau County police said.
Jose Forero, of Valley Stream, was driving a 2023 Jeep Gladiator south on North Franklin Avenue near Centre Street around 11:40 p.m. when he struck a pedestrian who was crossing North Franklin Avenue, police said in a news release.
The male victim suffered severe body trauma and was transported for treatment at a hospital, where he was pronounced dead, according to police.
Forero, who remained at the scene, was arrested and charged with first- and second-degree vehicular manslaughter and driving while intoxicated, police said.
He was set to be arraigned on Saturday at First District Court in Hempstead.
