GLOCESTER – There were 250 meters and one runner between Sean Gray and the goal he set for himself when he started taking his running seriously, so there was no better time to make one last move for the ages.

And boy did it work out.

Trailing Hendricken’s Colby Flynn by a few feet heading into the last turn at the 2025 RIIL Boys Cross Country State Championships, the Portsmouth senior made a decision that changed everything. Flynn went inside, Gray went outside and took the advantage when it allowed him to slide inside down the homestretch. He emptied the tank and, with Flynn in hot pursuit, had just enough left to cross the finish line in 15:16.10, good for a .41 win and his first individual state title.
