6.3 magnitude quake hits near Khulm, USGS reports

A powerful 6.3 magnitude earthquake struck northern Afghanistan early Monday, shaking wide areas of the region, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). The tremor, which jolted residents shortly after midnight, caused concern but there were no immediate reports of damage or casualties.

The USGS said the quake’s epicentre was located 22 kilometres west-southwest of Khulm. It had a depth of 28 kilometres and struck at 12:59 am local time.
