President Donald Trump recently showcased a newly renovated bathroom in the White House, following criticism over the demolition of the historical East Wing to make way for a new ballroom. In August, Trump highlighted the bathroom upgrade while discussing his plans for the ballroom, stating it had been "terribly" remodeled in the past. Over the weekend, he shared several photos of the refurbished Lincoln bathroom on his social media platform, Truth Social.

"I renovated the Lincoln Bathroom in the White House," Trump wrote. He noted that the bathroom had been remodeled in the 1940s with an Art Deco green tile style, which he deemed inappropriate for the Lincoln era. "I did it in black and white polished statuary marble. This was very appropriate for the time of Abraham Lincoln and, in fact, could be the marble that was originally there," he added.

The renovated bathroom features floor-to-ceiling marble, gold-colored plumbing fixtures, and a chandelier above the toilet. A White House official confirmed that the renovation was privately funded, but the cost of the project remains unclear. Questions regarding whether the bathroom renovation underwent any formal design or approval process were posed to the White House, but officials did not respond immediately.

Before the renovation, Trump shared a photo of the bathroom for comparison. The bathroom is connected to the Lincoln Bedroom, which has undergone several renovations over the years, including updates during George W. Bush's presidency. However, the bathroom itself had not been updated until now. In a 2007 article, a writer noted that the bathroom had remained largely unchanged, describing it as a well-preserved 1950s space with pale green tiles and a mirrored dome ceiling light.

Historians have commented on the historical accuracy of the renovation. Michael F. Bishop, former director of the Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Commission, stated that it was unlikely the bathroom had marble during Lincoln's time. He described the original bathroom as "plain" and remarked, "Trump's change to the bathroom is not remotely a crime against historical preservation or anything like that. It was just a fairly dated-looking bathroom."

Despite the cosmetic changes, the layout of the bathroom appears to remain the same, with the toilet still positioned to overlook other White House buildings. In the photos shared by Trump, construction workers in high-visibility vests and helmets can be seen through the window, suggesting ongoing renovation projects at the White House.

In addition to the bathroom renovation, Trump is overseeing the construction of a new ballroom, which he claims will address long-standing issues with hosting major events. Currently, large events are held in a marquee set up about a football field away from the White House, which can be problematic in inclement weather. The new White House State Ballroom is expected to add approximately 90,000 square feet of space, accommodating up to 650 guests, significantly more than the East Room's 200-person limit.

Demolition crews recently completed the teardown of the East Wing, which has drawn criticism and surprise from the public. Polling data indicates that 40 percent of respondents strongly disapprove of the demolition, while 24 percent are uncertain about it. Since the beginning of his second term, Trump has also made changes to the Rose Garden, replacing grass with white stone, citing issues for women wearing high heels on the lawn. The new paved area has already been utilized for various events, including a Medal of Freedom ceremony and a club lunch.

Additionally, Trump has made decorative changes to the Oval Office, adding gold embellishments and hanging portraits of himself throughout the property. Giant U.S. flags have also been installed on new flagpoles on the north and south lawns.
