People in Victoria's east were left confused and fascinated after a streak of white light shot through the sky on Sunday afternoon.
A suspected meteor streaked across the Gippsland sky just after 4:30pm in an event that experts have labelled as unusual.
Monash University planetary geologist Rachel Kirby said the incident was still being investigated, but the trajectory and speed of the flying object made her "fairly confident" it was a meteor and not space junk.
"The speed at which it's moving is too fast for space junk," Dr Kirby said.
"And the fact that you saw it during the day suggests it's actually quite a large object."
