A star with a sense of humor about her stardom, Sydney Sweeney is fairly fearless when it comes to choosing her roles.
Take this week’s “Christy,” a fact-based biopic that ricochets from triumph to tragedy as Sweeney, 28, goes for broke to capture this virtually unknown champion.
As a prize-winning boxer, Christy Martin made the cover of Sports Illustrated and was the first female athlete signed by legendary boxing promoter Don King.
Nicknamed “the Coal Miner’s Daughter” because of her father’s profession, she was the first female boxer elected to the Nevada Boxing Hall of Fame and in 2020, the first year women were on the ballot, she was elected to the International Boxing Hall of Fame.
She also survived being stabbed and shot by her manager/husband (Ben Foster).
