GREEN BAY, Wis. (WBAY) - Opioid-related deaths have declined across the country, but the recovery drug making that possible may be losing its appeal.
Officials have praised naloxone, also known as Narcan, noting its success in fighting the nation’s opioid crisis. However, concerns have emerged because sales for the medication for reversing an opioid overdose have slowed.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says nearly 105,000 people died from drug overdose in 2023, and 76% of those were related to opioids.
Over-the-counter availability
Naloxone has been available for purchase over the counter and without a prescription since September 2023.
With a $45 price tag and emergency-use only purpose, experts say some Americans may not feel the drug is worth the cost.
