SAN ANTONIO — More than 20,000 people in San Antonio will get better and faster internet on Monday.
AT&T and the city finished a project that’ll help expand fiber optic internet throughout the city.
This project has been in the works since 2023. That’s when the state got $ 3.3 billion to expand internet accessibility, and San Antonio got a piece of that pie.
The city signed an agreement with a AT&T to expand broadband access within districts 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6-, covering the east, west, and south sides of town. AT&T paid $24.6 million, and the city paid $8.8 million to expand that access. Initially, Erik Walsh, city manager for San Antonio stated the original target was expanding access to 13 or 14 thousand individuals, but AT&T was able to find that more than 20,000 lacked access.
