(SavorNation) – Few foods are as quick, portable and filling as a sandwich. And on Nov. 3, this popular lunch option is celebrated.
National Sandwich Day falls on the birthday of John Montagu, the 4th Earl of Sandwich, who is often credited as the inventor of the sandwich, although the concept of using bread to “sandwich” a filling predates Montagu. Montagu was said to be so engrossed with his card game that he wanted something he could eat with his hands at the card table, so he requested roast beef between two slices of bread.
Whether you like your sandwich stacked tall with meat, packed with crunchy fresh veggies or ooey-gooey cheesy, restaurants across the nation are celebrating the humble sandwich Nov. 3 with freebies, deals and discounts.
