DETROIT, Mich. (WILX) - Waymo, the driverless vehicle company, announced Monday that it will launch its driverless car service in Detroit this winter.

Waymo is owned by Google’s parent company, Alphabet, and is currently only in 5 other cities, which include Phoenix, Los Angeles, Austin, San Francisco, and Atlanta.

According to a company blog post , Waymo has spent the past several years testing its self-driving technology in Michigan, focusing specifically on improving its performance in challenging winter conditions.

Engineers have conducted trials in Detroit and Michigan’s Upper Peninsula to develop the vehicles’ ability to handle snow, ice, and freezing temperatures.
