Before entering city hall as Montreal’s newly elected mayor , Soraya Marinez Ferrada made a stop in the city’s Saint-Michel district Monday morning to thank electors for their support.

“I call this my hood,” she told reporters in French. “This is my (Saint-Michel) métro, this is my neighbourhood, I was candidate (for city hall in 2005) in Saint-Michel, so I’m very happy to come here and say hello to the people in my district.”

She reminded reporters that her attachment to the neighbourhood is more than just political.

“This is my home. This is my neighbourhood. This is where I grew up.”
