An alleged Islamic State supporter, Walid Saadaoui, has been accused of plotting a terror attack targeting Jews in Manchester. During a trial at Preston Crown Court, Saadaoui reportedly told an undercover operative posing as a fellow jihadist, "We are suicidal with Allah's permission" and "we have pledged to die brother - this is not a joke." These statements were made just six days before a planned smuggling operation involving guns and ammunition through Dover, the jury was informed. Saadaoui, a Tunisia-born former restaurateur, has denied the terror charges alongside his co-accused, Amar Hussein. The court also heard from Saadaoui's brother, Bilel Saadaoui, who has denied failing to disclose acts of terrorism. Evidence presented included conversations between Walid and the undercover operative, identified only as Farouk. Farouk reassured Saadaoui that a corrupt French border official would ensure that his vehicle, allegedly containing firearms, would not be scanned. In a recorded exchange on May 2, 2024, Walid stated, "If he didn't do his job I'll go and slaughter him." When Farouk expressed concern about potential issues at the border, Saadaoui responded, "We will directly, we are suicidal with Allah's permission... We'll be throwing ourselves into death going forward and not turning back fleeing. We have pledged to die." Farouk replied, "May Allah bless you brother, may Allah reward you," to which Saadaoui reiterated, "We have pledged to die brother, this is not a joke.... Your life is our life, Glory be to Allah." Both Walid Saadaoui and Amar Hussein have pleaded not guilty to preparing terrorist acts, which allegedly took place between December 13, 2023, and May 9, 2024. The prosecution claims they arranged for the purchase and delivery of firearms, conducted reconnaissance, and made plans for an attack. Saadaoui's defence argues that he was under pressure from others and intended to sabotage the plot by alerting the authorities. The trial continues as the court examines the evidence presented against the defendants.
