Old dynamite discovered during a property clean-out in Valdez on Thursday prompted a response from multiple explosive ordnance disposal teams and the temporary evacuation of nearby homes.
According to the City of Valdez, the explosives were found around 3 p.m. at a residence on Dadina Street by someone authorized to clean the property. Valdez police EOD, with state and federal personnel assisting, determined the dynamite was in a degraded condition and unsafe to move.
Nearby residents were notified of a potential hazard and asked to temporarily leave while the operation was underway. Valdez Fire and EMS were on standby.
By about 6 p.m., the dynamite was disposed of and residents were cleared to return home.
City officials thanked responding agencies for their work.
