Northern Alberta MLAs are raising concerns about a new interim report by the Alberta Electoral Boundaries Commission that proposes the seven electoral divisions in the region be consolidated into six.
The interim Electoral Boundaries Commission report published in October recommends the Lesser Slave Lake riding be replaced by Mackenzie, as the ridings in the north have “either lost population or grown at a rate that is less than the province as a whole.”
The commission said it is sympathetic to the challenges of representing the north, but continues to consider the population variances there to be the highest in the province. It concluded an electoral division needed to be removed from the region.
