The house was rented through Airbnb for a birthday party promoted on social media, drawing a large crowd of teenagers. The incident occurred around 12:15 a.m., about 15 miles northwest of Akron. Police Chief Vito Sinopoli stated that the severity of the injuries is unclear, and it is not confirmed if all nine victims were shot, as one person may have been injured by a fall.

The party was held at a rental property, which violates local zoning ordinances, and most attendees were under 18. The motive for the shooting remains unknown, and no arrests have been made . Sinopoli noted that social media posts about the party contributed to the large turnout.
