FRANKFORT, Ky. (WSAZ) - Former Kentucky Governor Martha Layne Collins passed away Saturday at 88 years old, according to Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear.

Collins was the 56th Governor of Kentucky and was the only female governor for the state.

She served as governor from 1983 to 1987.

Before becoming governor, Collins served as Lieutenant Governor from 1979 to 1983.

“Former Gov. Martha Layne Collins was a powerhouse, transforming our commonwealth through major accomplishments like bringing Toyota to our state for its first U.S. site.
