SNAP recipients Monday morning were still in limbo on the promise of continued funding for federal food assistance despite judges' orders to resume it.

The White House is facing a 9 a.m. PST Monday deadline to answer how they will comply with the orders to use contingency funds for SNAP recipients to buy food and basic staples at grocery stores.

SNAP funding ran out Saturday because of the ongoing government shutdown. But two judges on Friday ruled that the U.S. Department of Agriculture must use $5 billion in contingency funds to keep the program at least partially funded. The USDA argues the contingency funds are reserved for situations like natural disasters.
