**Taxi Driver Acquitted of Stealing David Lammy's Luggage**
A taxi driver accused of stealing luggage belonging to David Lammy has been acquitted of all charges. Nassum Mimun, 40, faced a potential three-year prison sentence when he appeared at Bonneville Criminal Court in eastern France today. The allegations stemmed from an incident earlier this year involving Lammy, the current deputy prime minister, and his wife, Nicola Green.
In April, Mimun drove the couple on a 370-mile journey through the Alps. Following the trip, he claimed that Lammy had "acted like a thug" when he requested payment. Mimun recounted, "When he [Lammy] got out of the vehicle, he said, ‘f***ing French, f***ing French’. I was afraid."
However, Lammy has strongly denied the accusations, stating he "totally refutes" the claims and asserting that the fare was paid in full. The court found that there was insufficient evidence to prove that Mimun had intended to keep the couple's belongings.
Mimun, who had been banned from driving due to the allegations, expressed his relief at the verdict, stating he was "delighted" with the outcome. He admitted to driving off with the couple's suitcase but insisted he never meant to leave the scene with their property. Mimun explained that he intended to report the incident to the police after the couple refused to pay, and he did not realise the luggage was still in his vehicle at the time.
This case has drawn significant attention, given Lammy's political status and the nature of the allegations. The judge's ruling has cleared Mimun of wrongdoing, allowing him to resume his life without the burden of the charges against him.
This is a developing story, and further updates may follow as more information becomes available.
