PHILADELPHIA (WPHL) -- SEPTA is expanding the city’s network of red-painted, bus-only lanes to include Chestnut Street (Broad to 21st), Walnut Street (Broad to 19th), and Oregon Avenue (5th to Front).

The three lanes being added are considered "critical transit corridors," according to SEPTA, the City of Philadelphia, and PennDOT.

The expansion builds on the success of existing lanes on Chestnut, Market, and Erie Avenue by keeping lanes clear of illegal parking and prioritizing public transit.

“Expanding red bus lanes is a proven way to make transit faster and safer,” said PennDOT Secretary Mike Carroll. “We’re proud to continue partnering with the City and SEPTA to enhance Philadelphia’s transit network.”

The initiative coincides with ongoing PennDOT repaving work and complements SEPT
