By August 2025, the number of registered secondary homes in the city had grown past 20,000
With many people moving to Calgary in recent times, efforts have ramped up to supply adequate housing.
As part of that campaign, Calgary city council voted almost two years ago to extend an amnesty program for existing secondary suites, allowing for compliant residences to be registered at lower cost.

“Since the beginning of the Amnesty Program in 2018 we have seen a significant increase in the number of safe, legal suites registered with The City,” Calgary’s director of development, business and building services Brenda Desjardins said in a news release issued in December 2023. “Legal and registered suites provide safe and affordable housing choices for renters and owners.”
