Seven justices serve ten-year terms on our state’s highest court and this year Pennsylvania voters must decide whether to keep three of them, all Democrats. I urge a ‘no’ vote on all three.

The Pennsylvania Constitution allows sitting justices to be retained or removed with a simple “yes” or “no” vote without reference to political affiliation, in a system was designed to remove justices from political pressures. This is not to say that individual justices lack a party affiliation.

Justices are initially elected in partisan elections. Pennsylvania is one of only eight states that elect justices that way. Five justices are Democrats and two are Republicans.
