MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- The lapse in SNAP benefits will impact 167,000 families in the Memphis-Shelby County area, but minor relief is on the way.
Following a federal judge’s ruling on Friday, the Trump administration said it will dip into a contingency fund to allow states to issue partial SNAP benefits.
As families wait for that money to appear on their debit cards, a Shelby County Commissioner is asking MLGW to pause disconnections for verified recipients.
“Too many families are making decisions right now when it comes to, ‘Do they buy groceries, do they keep their lights on and everything else,’ when it comes to things that are happening in Washington," said Commissioner Mickell Lowery.
Lowery wants MLGW to pause disconnections until the government shutdown ends or through January 31, 20
