The suspect, who allegedly ran over and killed a 16-year-old McKinley High School girl two years ago, did not plead guilty to the charges including first-degree negligent homicide at a scheduled change of plea hearing.
Instead Mitchel Miyashiro asked the court to set the matter for trial.
Circuit Judge Trish Morikawa waived his right to a speedy trial, according to his wishes, and set the trial for April 6.
The state did not offer Miyashiro a plea agreement, and the girl’s family rejected the defense’s offer of a plea deal.
Miyashiro pleaded not guilty after he was charged in December 2023 in the death of Sara Yara and injury of her schoolmate, who were both walking in a marked crosswalk at the intersection of Kapiolani Boulevard of Kamakee Street on Feb. 15, 2023.
