SURPRISE, Ariz. — A woman was arrested Sunday after she left her 18-month-old child in a hot car while she shopped at a Surprise Walmart, police said.

Officers found an 18-month-old child in Jessica Salazar's car that was not running and only had a window cracked around 12:45 p.m. Sunday. While it was 86 degrees outside, it was 114 degrees inside the car when police broke the window to get the child out, according to police.

Salazar was seen on video entering the Walmart on Greenway around 12:30 p.m., according to the Surprise Police Department.

The child was showing signs of distress and was evaluated by firefighters.

Salazar told officers she had only gone into the store for five minutes, but when they checked the video, she had been inside for reportedly 15 minutes.
