Senator Rick Scott announced the reintroduction of the American Shores Protection Act today, a legislative effort aimed at codifying the moratorium on oil drilling off Florida’s Gulf of Mexico and Atlantic Coasts.

The bill seeks to make permanent the existing ban, initially established by President Trump through an executive order that runs through 2032.

Senator Scott has been a long-time champion of keeping Florida’s waters free from drilling, working with the former president both during his tenure as governor and as a U.S. Senator to safeguard the state’s environmentally and economically vital coastlines, which also serve as a crucial military training zone known as the Gulf Test and Training Range.
