E. Lockhart talks to PEOPLE about working on We Were Liars and writing her newest novel, We Fell Apart

The new book came to her while she was touring an architect's former estate

When she got the news that her award-winning young adult novel We Were Liars was going to be made into a TV series, author E. Lockhart had two wishes The first, she tells PEOPLE, was for the show to get a second season , "which we did, and that was completely not under my control," she says.

The other was that the show would bring readers back to the book, or inspire them to pick it up for the first time.
