COLUMBUS — Gov. Mike DeWine and state legislative leaders should provide more funding for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program as the federal government shutdown continues, according to faith leaders from Toledo and across Ohio.

Leaders of the First Unitarian Church of Toledo were among a group of individuals participating in an Ohio Poor People’s Campaign event at the Statehouse on Monday.

“I had a congregant approach me at church the other day who seemed very worried about whether there would be enough food for people, and I think was maybe just embarrassed that they might need food, and they were afraid to ask. I don’t know, but we have to step up. People shouldn’t have to live in fear. This is America,” said Krista Schneider, president of the church’s board of trustees.
