KENTWOOD, MI - Standing shoulder to shoulder on Monday, Nov. 3, state leaders rolled up their sleeves to help ensure that families across the region can still put food on the table amid the pause of Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) notified Michigan and other states last week of the Nov. 1 pause due to the federal government shutdown. Since then, it has created widespread concern among locals.
A group of volunteers spent their morning and afternoon preparing thousands of boxes full of Pop-Tarts and other non-perishable grocery items to give away to those in need.
State Representatives John Fitzgerald (D-Wyoming) and Phil Skaggs (D-Kentwood) were among the people folding, packing and taping the boxes in the afternoon
