**Teen Dies in Fiery Crash on Vancouver Island; Mountie Injured in Chilliwack** An 18-year-old man lost his life in a fiery crash on Vancouver Island late Sunday night. The incident occurred around 10:30 p.m. on Highway 1, just south of Nanaimo, when a black Audi S3 sedan crashed and ignited in the northbound lanes near Morden Road. Cpl. Michael McLaughlin of the B.C. RCMP highway patrol reported that witnesses indicated a second dark-colored vehicle was in the vicinity at the time of the crash but did not stop. "We need to know more about that second dark car, possibly a black Honda Civic, that was driving in close proximity to the black Audi in the moments before it crashed," McLaughlin stated. The driver of the Audi, a 19-year-old man from Nanaimo, sustained non-life-threatening injuries and is currently hospitalized. Unfortunately, his passenger died in the accident. Authorities are urging anyone with dashcam footage or information about the incident to contact the highway patrol in Duncan at 250-746-2751. In a separate incident, a Chilliwack RCMP officer is recovering in the hospital after being involved in a head-on collision early Sunday morning. The crash occurred around 1:10 a.m. on Vedder Road, just north of Stevenson Road. The officer had activated her emergency lights when a southbound 2006 Lincoln Zephyr crossed into the northbound lane and collided with her fully marked 2021 Ford Explorer police SUV. Sgt. Alexandra Mulvihill, a spokesperson for the RCMP in the upper Fraser Valley, noted that witness statements suggest speed and erratic driving by the Lincoln driver contributed to the crash. Alcohol has been ruled out as a factor. The Mountie is currently in stable condition, while the 29-year-old driver of the Lincoln was treated for minor injuries and released. The investigation into the crash is ongoing, and no charges have been filed at this time.
