DAVENPORT, Iowa (KWQC) - Even though President Donald Trump said on Monday SNAP will be partially funded, many people have struggled to put food on the table.
The federal government stopped funding the food assistance program on Saturday amid the federal shutdown, and many charities, organizations, and state and city agencies have stepped up.
One of the biggest food assistance programs in the region, River Bend Food Bank, is seeking $145,000 in donations in order to get the maximum match from Iowa.
Some nonprofits are saying they’ve seen a huge rise in demand for help.
The YWCA Quad Cities’ Empowerment Center said the number of families it serves has quadrupled in the past several months.
Businesses and stores are offering specials to help families.
