NIAGARA FALLS, NY (WKBW) — The Niagara Gospel Mission on Portage Road in Niagara Falls has expanded its meal service in response to SNAP benefit suspensions affecting thousands of residents.

The mission is opening its doors to a wider community, expanding from serving just dinner to adding lunch for the entire community as families face food assistance uncertainties.

Executive Director John Cooper tells me they're preparing for a surge in need.

"It's a tough time, especially for the families that are in need, but that's why we exist," reflected Cooper.

Cooper said the poverty rate is at 46% in this community, and the mission also serves the third poorest zip code in Western New York.
