MOORHEAD — An attorney for a Moorhead woman accused of neglecting her dying toddler has asked a judge to throw out the mother’s statements to investigators.
Moorhead Police detectives did not read Miranda rights when they interviewed 33-year-old Valerie Connie Zamora three times after her 20-month-old son, Jose Lazarus Zamora, died in May, her defense attorney Michael Minard said Monday, Nov. 3, in Clay County District Court. The statements she made during those interviews should be excluded if she goes to trial, Minard said.
Valerie Zamora is charged with second-degree murder, a felony that says her son died as a result of child neglect or endangerment. If convicted, she faces up to 40 years in prison.
The defendant told law enforcement that Jose Zamora vomited the morning of May 1
