In an effort to ease the city’s recurrent flooding problems, local leaders broke ground Monday on a long-awaited project to redevelop the Annapolis waterfront.

The ceremony came just days after the city’s most recent flooding, which left downtown under four feet of water on Thursday.

“We saw again last week how urgent the problem of downtown flooding has become. We cannot wait any longer,” Mayor Gavin Buckley said. “The economic and community heart of Annapolis is at risk.”

The new City Dock will be elevated and include a series of flood barriers and pumps. It will also feature a new park and welcome center. Parking spaces on the dock will be replaced with a new garage.
