The Supreme Court on Monday, November 3, declined to entertain a petition seeking regulation of online content, including a ban on pornographic material, observing that such matters fall under the government's policy domain.
A bench of Chief Justice BR Gavai and Justice K Vinod Chandran drew attention to the Nepal GenZ protests of September which followed a similar move to curb social media usage.
"You know there was an attempt to ban social media in Nepal and you saw what was the consequence," CJI Gavai said, as per The Hindustan Times.
The court was hearing a public interest litigation (PIL) filed by social activist BL Jain, who sought a nationwide mechanism to restrict access to pornographic content available online.
