Donna Jean Godchaux, a former vocalist for the Grateful Dead and backup singer for Elvis Presley, died of cancer Sunday in Nashville at the age of 78.
Godchaux, whose full name was Donna Jean Thatcher Godchaux-MacKay, was a member of the Grateful Dead from 1972 to 1979. She was featured as a backup singer on Elvis Presley’s “Suspicious Minds,” and also performed with the Jerry Garcia Band.
Godchaux was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1994 along with other members of the Grateful Dead.
