In the mid-2000s, Marvel Comics decided to give Spider-Man organic webshooters, like his counterpart in the Sam Raimi films; except the publisher went about this in the most bizarre way possible: by having Peter Parker transform into a giant spider, and then give birth to a nearly-identical copy of himself.

Released in 2004, The Spectacular Spider-Man (Vol. 2) #20 was written by Paul Jenkins, with art by Paco Medina. It was part of the wider Avengers: Disassembled event that rocked the foundations of the Marvel Universe.

In retrospect, it's especially curious that Marvel put Spider-Man through such a drastic body horror nightmare to enact a relatively minor character change.
