MADISON, Wis. (WMTV) - In honor of the launch of our annual Share Your Holidays campaign, our Mark McPherson sat down with Dr. Shilagh Mirgain, a distinguished psychologist with UW Health, to break down the benefits of giving and paying it forward.
Aside from helping others and brightening their day, giving is also beneficial for the giver.
“There was a study that gave people $100, and if they spent it on themselves, yeah, they’re a little bit happy.” Mirgain explained. “But if they spent it on other people, they were significantly happier for even up to a month later. So, doing a little bit of good helps us in return.”
Mirgain also said that volunteering in your community can help us feel more connected, boost our mood by lowering depression and anxiety, and even provide health benef
