The Albanese government has announced it will force energy retailers to provide free electricity to households for three hours during the middle of the day.
The plan, known as the Solar Sharer Offer, hopes to shift energy usage to the middle of the day, when rooftop solar output is highest.
Solar Sharer will only be available to households with smart meters, and those who can increase their energy usage in the daytime, when many people are at work.
The offer, provided through energy retailers, will be available to all households in NSW, South-East Queensland, and South Australia from July 2026.
Energy Minister Chris Bowen said on Tuesday the move will deliver free power generated from solar panels to households, regardless of whether they have panels installed.
