WACO, Texas (KWTX) - The Waco Metropolitan Planning Organization is launching a new grant project that uses AI to predict and manage traffic flow in downtown in an effort to improve efficiency.
The system uses small, AI- driven sensors called FlowCubes that are attached to traffic lights. Dr. Kumar, Waco MPO’s director, said they collect detailed data at intersections. Although they use an infrared camera to scan its viewpoints, it does not collect video data. Instead, it converts data to text entries, which are then used to predict and manage traffic.
FlowCubes are able to track the amount of cars stopped at an intersection or coming up to the stoplight and pedestrians/cyclists waiting to cross the road.
