PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) -- Off-year elections generally have a low voter turnout. This year's elections in the Portland and Vancouver areas are no exception as voters weigh in on levies.
In Portland, about 20% of voters have weighed in on the parks levy. A new 5-year levy is on the ballot to maintain Portland parks and pay for needed repairs. It's $1.40 per $1000 of assessed value, which is a 75% increase over the current levy.
Supporters of the proposal say the parks will deteriorate without the money. Opponents say Portlanders are already paying too much in taxes and fees and a recent audit shows the Parks Bureau doesn't have a long-term financial plan.
