US President Donald Trump has issued a stark warning regarding the New York City mayoral election, stating he will limit federal funds to the city if Democratic candidate Zohran Mamdani emerges victorious. In a post on Truth Social, Trump labelled Mamdani a "Communist" and predicted dire economic consequences for the city under his leadership.
Trump expressed his concerns, saying, "If Communist Candidate Zohran Mamdani wins the Election for Mayor of New York City, it is highly unlikely that I will be contributing federal funds, other than the very minimum as required. As a Communist, this once great city has zero chance of success, or even survival. I don’t want to send good money after bad."
The President, who has strong ties to New York, emphasized his responsibility to the nation and warned that the city would face a complete economic and social disaster if Mamdani takes office. He urged voters to support former Governor Andrew Cuomo, stating, "Whether you personally like Andrew Cuomo or not, you really have no choice. You must vote for him, and hope he does a fantastic job."
Trump also criticized Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa, suggesting that a vote for Sliwa would inadvertently aid Mamdani's campaign. He remarked, "A vote for Curtis Sliwa (who looks much better without the beret!) is a vote for Mamdani."
This intervention marks Trump's most significant involvement in a local election that has garnered national attention, reflecting deep ideological divides on issues such as housing, policing, and federal aid. The election is set for November 4, with Mamdani currently leading in the polls against Cuomo and Sliwa, making it a crucial moment for the city's political landscape.
