ST PAUL, Minn. — After Tuesday, the Twin Cities will go their separate ways in their approaches to mayoral elections. At least for now.

A 2024 ballot question approved by St. Paul voters will shift future municipal elections from odd years to even years, in order to match the cycle of federal elections.

That means the next mayor will serve a three-year term and that future mayoral elections will coincide with presidential elections, which tend to garner to to three times the turnout as recent St. Paul city elections.

Peter Butler, the St. Paul resident who collected the signatures to get the question on the ballot back in 2024, said he was first inspired to take action ten years ago, when less than 15% of registered St. Paul voters cast a ballot in a city election.
