SMITHFIELD, R.I. (WPRI) — The Smithfield School Committee voted in favor of authorizing an investigation into the district's response to an antisemitic hazing incident involving the high school's football team.

The investigation, which will be conducted by an outside attorney, will focus on the administrative response to the incident and the steps that were taken to address it.

Jewish Alliance of Greater Rhode Island CEO Adam Greenman said his organization was told that several football players barricaded a freshman student in a bathroom in late September, doused him with a spray bottle and shouted antisemitic slurs at him.

In a statement issued last month, Bartz confirmed that the district's investigation found "inappropriate conduct among a small number of students."
