LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Louisville Parks and Recreation kicked off tree planting season Monday, part of the city’s growing effort to build a greener, healthier community.

The department’s Urban Forestry Division plants about 2,000 trees each year and harvests up to 500 from its own nursery. Keeping it local saves money and helps more trees survive since they’re already adapted to Louisville’s environment.

Landscape Supervisor Chris Cornelius said the nursery plays a big role in that success.

"We don't want to repopulate the nursery all at once because we will have a massive influx of trees for one season," Cornelius said.

The city will continue planting through the season as it works to strengthen Louisville’s tree canopy.
