Maryland Gov. Wes Moore (D) announced Monday that the state will pay for the portion of federal food stamp benefits not covered by the federal government for November, a reversal in position after the Trump administration agreed in the wake of a federal court order to release half of the program’s federal funds for the month.
After weeks of saying Maryland could not afford to fill the gap in funding during the federal government shutdown, Moore’s administration said it will use the state’s Fiscal Responsibility Fund to allow about 680,000 residents in the state who rely on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program — known as SNAP — to continue receiving food assistance. SNAP costs about $123 million a month in Maryland.
