Canada has denied study permit applications from nearly 75 % of Indian nationals in August 2025, marking a significant shift in its international-student policy.

According to government data, that month saw roughly a 74 % rejection rate for Indian applicants — compared with a 32 % rate in August 2023. Meanwhile, the overall global rejection rate remained around 40 %.

The total number of Indian applicants for student permits also dropped sharply, from approximately 20,900 in August 2023 to just 4,515 in August 2025. Historically, India has been the largest single source of international students for Canada’s post-secondary institutions.
